Transmission & Driveline

With an unmatched history of developing transmission and driveline solutions for the world’s most demanding customers boasting the most challenging applications, Ricardo is the undisputed leader in the design and integration of transmission and driveline systems.

Ricardo is a one-stop-shop for concept to production driveline development – from our standout applications in some of the world’s most legendary super cars and race cars to motorcycle, rail, marine, defense and, of course, high-volume automotive applications. It’s a remarkable resume highlighted by the Bugatti Veyron and now Chiron dual clutch transmission and rear differential, Audi 24 Hours of Le Mans winning transmissions, 7MW wind turbine drives and 8×8 military drivelines.

Ricardo engineers design, develop and test new transmissions and differentials specifically for client applications. Our expertise blankets modern transmission systems and technologies, including manual, automatic, variable speed, continuously variable and automated manual transmissions.

With a broad expertise in varied operational environments, the Ricardo team combines deep technical and manufacturing experience with strategic insights and extensive supplier assessment.

Electrification of the powertrain extends to the transmission and driveline area – rather than 8, 9 or more speed transmissions, the focus is “3 in 1” Electric Drive Units (EDUs), where the e-motor, inverter and geartrain are in one unit. However, the “number of ratios” question is not dead—is it single-, dual- or three-speed? Or more for commercial vehicle applications? Ricardo has developed multiple speed – and multiple unit – solutions for all applications, providing remedies to meet our customers’ needs and requirements.
